Drumming Workshops

Drumming for wellbeing and team building:

Here is an example of a typical workshop

We work with you to discuss the best plan for your team.

Introduction to Rhythms

The workshop begins with an introduction to the foundational rhythms of samba. Participants will learn to play instruments such as the surdo (bass drum), tamborim, and cowbells. Teams can be divided into smaller groups, with each group mastering a different instrument, working towards synchronising the rhythms.

Movement: Participants, if able and willing to, will learn simple steps to compliment the music. Samba’s energetic, quick footwork will meet the laid-back, flowing movements of reggae, allowing participants to express themselves creatively while working as a team to coordinate the movement.

Team Rhythm Challenge:

With the rhythms and moves in place, the group will take on a collaborative challenge: designing and performing a Samba-Reggae based fusion performance. Working together, teams will create a short routine, incorporating both percussion and movement. This exercise fosters communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking as teams work to synchronise their instruments, movements, and energy.

Reflection and Debrief:

After the performance, the group will gather for a reflective discussion led by the facilitator. The focus will be on the teamwork, communication, and creativity that made the performance successful. Teams will have the chance to share insights on what worked well and how the experience connects to their everyday work challenges and successes.

    Take-aways

By the end of the workshop, participants will have hopefully gained a deeper understanding of the power of collaboration and creativity in a team setting. Having achieved something as a team, they’ll leave with a stronger sense of unity and communication skills, as well as a fresh perspective on problem-solving through music and movement. Drumming for Wellbeing offers a fun and energising way to build trust, enhance group dynamics, and reinforce the importance of working together toward a shared goal.

Employee wellbeing has become a top priority for many organisations, as businesses strive to improve employee engagement. Drumming for Wellbeing offers a unique and dynamic approach to enhancing workplace wellbeing. Drumming, particularly when done as a group activity, offers numerous benefits that can help improve communication, collaboration, stress management, and overall morale in the workplace. The workshop roughly covers Samba-Reggae and uses instruments frequently seen in this genre.

The sessions are run one of our team of facilitators like Jon Hardeman – a multi-instrumentalist based in Bristol, UK with nearly 40 years experience making music, studying, performing, recording and teaching primarily Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban percussion and songs.

He always has been and continues to be very active within the UK Samba community, teaching many drumming groups and also at many broader arts and music festivals including Womad. He’s  also acted as musical director for many samba groups and performed with many UK bands. Jon is a font of knowledge on many genres of music and an experienced instructor.

    Team Building

Drumming has a rich history that spans across cultures and continents, dating back thousands of years. It is one of the oldest forms of musical expression. Expressing music and playing together creates a tangible, shared vision and expands the possibilities as to what can be achieved as a group. Drumming for Wellbeing doesn’t emphasise the divisions in a team, but creates an even playing field where everyone has an equal role in the activity.

Team drumming requires collaboration, synchronisation, and shared effort. When employees come together to drum, they must play to the same beat; listening to one another, following rhythms, and harmonising their movements to create a cohesive sound. This fosters a sense of unity and interconnectedness among team members, strengthening interpersonal relationships and encouraging collaboration.

The benefits of drumming extend far beyond the activity itself. As organisations continue to prioritise employee wellbeing, team drumming offers a unique and enjoyable way to enhance team dynamics, improve mental health, and build a positive, productive work culture. Incorporating drumming into the workplace can not only improve individual wellbeing but also strengthen team cohesion and contribute to a more engaged and motivated workforce.
